Jock Landale: Phoenix Suns Player Profile

What does the signing of Jock Landale bring to the table?

Jock Landale was signed by the Phoenix Suns on June 29, 2022. The 6′ 11″ Australian played for the Saint Mary’s Gaels from 2014 to 2018. Landale went undrafted in 2018 but would eventually sign a multi-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs on August 19, 2021. He had a very brief stint on the Spurs G-League team in December 2021 and then was moved this last off-season as part of the Dejounte Murray trade to the Atlanta Hawks. Shortly after the Suns acquired Landale from the Hawks for cash.

With JaVale McGee landing on the Dallas Mavericks and the Suns locking down DeAndre Ayton and Bismarck Biyombo, Landale figures to be a 3rd option at the center position. Last year the Suns had great depth at center with Biyombo as a strong 3rd option. Moving Biyombo to the backup big behind Ayton makes perfect sense while sliding Landale in as the 3rd center. If Landale can be a useful 3rd option it is possible that Dario Saric can fill in nicely back at the Power Forward position if ready to return from his ACL injury.

Jock Landale is not a super sexy signing, as shown with the stats below, so it is understandable that there is not much excitement surrounding the pick up. I fully expect Landale to be the deepest choice at center for the Suns. However, Landale has never played with a point guard like Chris Paul or been coached by Monty Williams. I am unsure how many starting minutes he would see with CP3 but Landale could tap into a portion of his game he didn’t know he had with the Point God and 2021/2022 Coach of the year leading him.
